Twitch cracks down on topless and 'sexually suggestive' streamers (update)
Some Twitch channels have long been known to include broadcasters in pretty racy clothes. Others have taken to adjusting their cameras in such a way that gameplay is not always the most exciting thing on the screen at any given time. It's a practice that's distracted from the intended goal of Twitch for too long, and some critics in the community have been vocal about asking Twitch to take steps against it.
In an update to its Rules of Conduct posted today Twitch has specifically banned what it calls "sexually suggestive clothing." The full section:
Dress...appropriately Nerds are sexy, and you're all magnificent, beautiful creatures, but let's try and keep this about the games, shall we? Wearing no clothing or sexually suggestive clothing - including lingerie, swimsuits, pasties, and undergarments — is prohibited, as well as any full nude torsos, which applies to both male and female broadcasters. You may have a great six-pack, but that's better shared on the beach during a 2-on-2 volleyball game blasting "Playing with the Boys." We sell t-shirts, and those are always acceptable. #Kappa
The hashtag #kappa is Twitch slang for sarcasm.
Polygon has reached out to Twitch to learn more about changes to their code.
Update: Twitch replied to our email saying that "we wanted to clarify the ages old question of dress code." Their PR representative Chase went on to add that "it's not what I would call breaking news since most of it is common sense."
