There's Already an iOS 8.1 Jailbreak For the iPhone 6

There's Already an iOS 8.1 Jailbreak For the iPhone 6

Some people sure do work quick. Team Pangu has just made available a jailbreak for iOS 8.1—and it works on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the iPad Air 2, along with older devices.

As Redmond Pie reports, there are a few small caveats: it's currently limited to SSH only and it doesn't (as yet) come with Cydia installed. But, if you like taking the life of your new and shiny device in your own hands, you can go ahead and install it now—it's already available to download for Windows.

Very seriously, going through with this might not be the best idea you ever had. But if you do... good luck!

Apple Builds One SIM Card to Rule Them All

Apple Builds One SIM Card to Rule Them All

While the iPad Air 2 and iMac with 5K Retina Display made big waves during Apple's Oct. 16 media event, the company quietly debuted one of its most interesting innovations off-stage. Buried in the official Web page for the iPad Air 2 is a section for the new "Apple SIM," which allows you to hop between carriers without having to swap out SIM cards.

Detailed in the wireless section of Apple's iPad Air 2 landing page, the new Apple SIM comes preinstalled with all Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the new tablet. The special SIM lets you choose a short-term plan from various carriers, which currently include AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint in the U.S. and EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) in the U.K.

According to Apple, the Apple SIM may also let you utilize a data plan from a local carrier when you're abroad. The company hasn't made a big announcement about Apple SIM, which isn't even mentioned in the press materials for the iPad Air 2. There's no word on if the new tech will make its way to the iPhone, but being able to switch carriers at-will would be much more handy on a smartphone than on a tablet.

You'll be able to test out Apple SIM on the new iPad Air 2, which packs an even slimmer body than its predecessor while adding a Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a faster A8X processor. You can pre-order the slate now, with orders shipping late next week.

iPad Air 2: Anti-Reflective Screen, A8X Power

iPad Air 2: Anti-Reflective Screen, A8X Power

The new iPad Air 2 has arrived, and it delivers a more powerful A8X processor and a new anti-reflective display in a design that's 18 percent thinner than its predecessor. There's also a Touch ID sensor on board.

The iPad Air 2 will start at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 64GB and $699 for 128GB. There will be cellular versions for $130 more.

The iPad Air is now .24 inches thick, down from .29 inches on the prior model. The new anti-reflective coating is a first for multi-touch tablets. It reduces reflections by 56 percent. This should come in handy for reading or shooting and viewing photos and videos outdoors.

As was rumored, the iPad Air 2 packs an A8X processor with 3 billion transistors The chip promises performance that is 40 percent faster and 2.5X faster graphics. The slate also includes a motion co-processor with a built-in barometer.

Although we're not fans of shooting with tablets, the Air 2 sports an improved camera. There's an 8-MP iSight camera that does burst mode photos and 43-MP panorama shots. A new FaceTime HD camera offers improved face detection and burst selfies.

The iPad Air 2 comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and faster LTE with more bands (20 of them). You'll be able to get up to 150 Mbps.

The Touch ID sensor will let you not only take advantage of Apple Pay in stores but also when you're shopping online.

Apple also announced the iPad mini 3, the latest version of its compact tablet. Starting at $399, the mini 3 features a 7.9-inch Retina display, a new FaceTime HD front camera, a 5-MP rear shooter and 802.11n Wi-Fi with MIMO.

Despite the fact that tablets sales haven been sluggish in the wake of phablets, Apple has sold a whopping 225 million iPads to date. In addition, Apple now offers 675,000 iPad apps, which is far more than the competition.

Apple iPad Air 2

Apple iPad Air 2 is here

Apple's got a new iPad, and it's a sequel to last year's ultra-svelte iPad Air: it's called the Apple iPad Air 2. CEO Tim Cook announced as much this morning from Apple's Cupertino, California headquarters with a video of a pencil being shaved down, a nod to last year's unveiling of the first iPad Air. The iPad Air 2 is 6.1mm, "18 percent thinner than the first iPad Air," Apple's Phil Schiller told attendees. "It's the world's thinnest tablet."

Of course, those following along at home saw this coming, right? A conspicuously-timed leak yesterday -- just after Google's big Nexus announcements -- saw both the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 revealed ahead of today's big event. Apple isn't exactly known for accidentally leaking two of its own products one day ahead of those products being announced, and Google's big news revolved around its own Nexus devices. You don't need to be a cynic to suspect something is up with that.

Intentionally "leaked" or not, Apple took to its own theater today in Cupertino to officially unveil the newest iPad Air. An October reveal is par for the course when it comes to Apple's iPad line in recent years: the first iPad Air was unveiled last year on October 22nd, and the previous model iPad was revealed almost exactly one year earlier on October 23rd, 2012.

Here's What to Expect from Thursday's Apple Event

Here's What to Expect from Thursday's Apple Event

It's been way too long...

At least that's what Apple states (maybe in jest) on its website, in anticipation of another product event slated for tomorrow. The event is expected to reveal a new line of updated iPads, iMacs and the next-generation desktop operating system, Yosemite. In Apple's third conference of 2014, the tech giant will likely announce new hardware and software updates to its products that often get out-shined by the iPhone. With the event less than 24 hours away, here's everything you can expect to see and hear tomorrow morning.

Where to Watch

In traditional Apple fashion, the event will be smack-dab in the middle of the day when most of us are posted up at our desks at work. With the start time at 10 a.m. PDT in the company's hometown of Cupertino, that puts us here on the East Coast waiting until 1 p.m. EST to watch it. Luckily, a livestream the conference will be broadcast via Apple's website here (Apple's Safari browser required).

What to Expect

It's fairly certain that two new iPads—the iPad 3 and iPad Air 2—will be announced. This comes after Apple accidentally leaked blueprints of the two devices on Wednesday in the iTunes Store, confirming many of the specs and rumors floating around until now.

October is when the company traditionally rolls out a new desktop operating system, so it's expected that the highly-anticipated new OS X Yosemite will be announced and made available to the public. To go with the new software will also be some new hardware in the form of an iMac with Retina Display.

The event is being held at Apple's Town Hall Auditorium in California, where the company's headquarters are located. This venue is much smaller and traditionally more exclusive than the Flint Center for the Performing Arts, where the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus where recently announced. This means we can expect less of a spectacle than what was thrown for the new iPhones just a month ago, likely because much of the technology being introduced has already been revealed to the public during the World Wide Developer's Conference in June.

The keynote speech will likely include appearances from Apple CEO Tim Cook and senior vice presidents Craig Federighi, Eddy Cue and Phil Schiller, all of whom have traditionally taken the stage at the conferences.

Apple Pay

The launch of one of the most notable features announced at the iPhone 6 reveal is almost definitely set to happen at this upcoming event, so get ready to hear that Apple Pay has gone live in hundreds of stores across the country come tomorrow. The system, poised to end the need for swiping credit and debit cards in stores in favor of storing all financial info on Apple devices, will be a huge lifestyle change for the public. In fact, 9to5Mac has reported that Apple already began training retail employees in using Apple Pay earlier this month.

But in typical Apple fashion, you never quite know what's going to come out of the conferences the company holds. So tune in tomorrow to see for yourself exactly what Apple has planned next.

Apple leaks iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3

Apple leaks iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3

The company appears to have accidentally spilled the beans about the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, which are expected to be announced tomorrow. Representations of both devices showed up in a screenshot of the iPad User Guide for iOS 8.1, which we're also expecting new details about tomorrow. We can't tell much from the image, but it does confirm that tablets will be getting Touch ID, bust shooting mode, which will be restricted to the iPad Air 2.

Could this leak come because of the recently announced Google Nexus devices?  We may never know, but you could ask for more perfect timing.  As details come about I will continue to update the blog and this post!
