Halo Nightfall Trailer Teases Military Action

Halo Nightfall Trailer Teases Military Action

Halo Nightfall Trailer

If I had to guess why the Halo series has achieved such massive popularity (aside from being compulsively playable), I would say it's because the franchise can take amazingly clichéd concepts and make them just work. Halo Nightfall, the upcoming live-action series coming soon to Microsoft's own Xbox Live service, now has a trailer to go along with it. While it's replete with hackneyed tropes, it still looks pretty watchable.

Halo Nightfall is a five-episode miniseries set to debut on Nov. 10 during the HaloFest livestream. The episodes will hover around 20 minutes in length, and bridge the narrative gap between Halo 4 and the upcoming Halo 5.

The trailer is less than three minutes long and speaks for itself, but if you want the Reader's Digest version, the series will follow the adventures of Agent Locke (Mike Colter of The Good Wife fame) as he leads a team of soldiers against the alien Covenant menace.

If you've seen a military-themed action show any time in the last 30 years or so, the trailer will feel like familiar territory. The "I work better alone," "They've never seen anything like it," and "Fall back!" quotas are well and truly met, and Locke's small team of experts feels a little like a dour, futuristic A-Team.

The video's description promises that Agent Locke "will play a key role" in Halo 5, so hardcore fans will probably want to check the series out. Otherwise, if you're only in it for the multiplayer, it's hard to imagine that Nightfall will have much bearing on fragging your friends and enemies.

If you miss the livestream, you can also check out Nightfall by purchasing The Master Chief Collection, which will debut for Xbox One on Nov. 11 at $60. Once the series completes its run, fans will be able to buy the complete Nightfall on DVD.
